Services for Elementary School-Age Children

School-age children are fascinating as they begin to tackle complex challenges ranging from academic pursuits to peer relationships to cultivating a unique talent or interest.  With these endeavors -- and associated triumphs! -- can come a considerable amount of stress and turmoil.  Common issues I see in elementary school-age children include:

  • anxieties and worries (including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, school refusal and/or specific fears such as germs, the dark, storms, heights, dogs/animals, doctors, etc.)

  • school/academic challenges (e.g., learning differences/disabilities, attention problems, difficulty keeping up with the workload)

  • behavioral problems (including defiance, noncompliance, hyperactivity/impulsivity, aggression)

  • social issues (e.g., perpetrator/victim of bullying, difficulty making or keeping friends, stress associated with cliques)

  • family conflict (parent-child and/or sibling discord)

Therapy with kids this age typically involves a combination of working with parents (with and without the child in the room) and working individually with the child.  No matter what combination of individual and family work I use, I keep parents informed and involved while making sure the child feels valued, respected and understood.  I use a variety of age-appropriate games, arts & crafts, toys and activities -- and a fitting sense of humor -- to help our time together feel safe, positive and productive.
