Services for Adolescents

Adolescence is a remarkable period of growth, exploration and formative experiences.  Teens face intense challenges while trying to balance autonomy and independence with responsibility and accountability.  They contend with exponentially greater demands -- academic, athletic, social, moral/ethical -- and the stakes are significantly higher.  My goal is to help this phase be exhilarating for teens and parents, rather than exhausting.

My work with adolescents often involves issues such as:

  • anxiety and depression (including sleep dysregulation)

  • poor self-esteem/self-concept

  • academic stress or underachievement (including issues related to learning differences/disabilities and attention problems)

  • peer relationships and social culture (including social media and gaming)

  • sexuality and relationships with romantic partners

  • family conflict (e.g., involving house rules, curfews, substance use, privacy, parental expectations)

Working with adolescents requires a strong therapeutic relationship so that the teen feels comfortable sharing their feelings and experiences.  The degree to which parents are directly involved in sessions varies widely depending on the family and the therapeutic goals.  Issues of confidentiality are discussed from the outset with all family members so that everyone feels comfortable.  Throughout our work together, I strive to communicate openly with teens and families about the process of therapy, the approaches I'm recommending, and our treatment progress.
